During World War II many businesses closed due to shortages of materials such as wood pulp needed for war production; however, with help from local farmers who grew crops surrounding Boulder Airport (then known as "Lone Pine"), Broomfield became one of Colorado's most prospering towns during that time period thanks largely to its strong civilian sector which produced goods such as soapuds and cigarettes even when war production halted nationwide. The first school in Broomfield was built in 1876 and the first post office was established in 1877. By 1890,Broomfield had a population of 2,000 people and it became a county seat in 1902. In 1916,Broomfield became an independent city when it amalgamated with Latimer County. In December 2002, Broomfield voters approved passage of a charter amendment creating a city government with its own police department and budgeting autonomy from the county government. The City has since experienced rapid growth and now has a total population over 10,000 residents.
The Broomfield area was first settled by prospectors in the late 1800s. The town began to thrive after it became a key railroad junction and port on the Missouri Pacific Railroad. Broomfield grew rapidly and quickly became one of the most important towns in the area. In 1912, Broomfield was renamed Colorado Springs.
