Broomfield, Colorado is an agricultural and ranching town located in the Sawatch Mountains of western Colorado. The population was 9,481 at the 2010 census. The name "Broomfield" is derived from a pioneer settler's account of finding broomstalks in the stream while surveying the area. The first brooms were used to cleanathers on the homesteads of early settlers. Today, Broomfield remains a working community with a strong tradition of agriculture and ranching. Ranches have been part of Broomfield's history for over 125 years. In 1892, John Davenport organized what became known as the Davenport Ranch and began to sell cattle and other livestock here. Over time, other ranchers joined Davenport on his operation, until it had a total of 24 ranches operating in Broomfield at its peak in 1907. During World War I, many soldiers barracks were built in Broomfield including Fort Lyon which served as artillery ammunition storage depot for Air Service pilots flying missions over Denver during WWI; these barracks remain today as part of Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Military Park outside Cheyenne, Wyoming. The population growth that occurred during the late 19th century led to demand for land and housing in Broomfeldtown- nearby Pueblo- so much so that by 1900 there were only 1 or 2 buildings left standing in downtown Broomeldtown after more than 100 years of development! From 1906-1960 there was continuous growth here with new businesses opening up all along US Highway 25A (now I-25) as people commuting into Boulder County started moving out to live closer to work opportunities and services available nearer by! The success stories throughout this period are evidence that hard work & dedication coupled with entrepreneurialism can result in great things when undertaken together – something that has continued through today’s industry strengths such as agriculture & ranching! Broomfield, Colorado is a small town in the Rocky Mountains located in the northeastern corner of Colorado. The population was 9,567 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Denver-Aurora-Lakewood, CO Metropolitan Statistical Area. Broomfield was founded by settler John Brown in 1859 and incorporated as a village in 1901. The first post office was established in Broomfield on November 7, 1861. In 1912, Broomfield became a city and has since been known for its large agricultural industry and its role as the site of UPI's headquarters from 1919 to 2001. The largest employer in Broomfield is Lockheed Martin Corporation with over 1,400 employees manufacturing aircraft parts and missiles. In addition to their production capabilities, LockheedMartin also operates two research laboratories - both within LockheedMartin's global missile division - which conduct research on advanced missile technology related to air defense systems and nuclear weapons delivery systems. The area around Broomfield was once used for hunting game such as deer and elk while nearby coal mines produced coal that made up much of the town’s early economy. Coal mining ceased after 1899 when natural gas began becoming available from shale gas fields near Aspen and other towns in western Colorado Springs County. However, local boosters continue to promote heavy industry there because it promises new jobsites will be created along railroad lines running through town; this “reconstruction syndrome” has not materialized during recent decades despite predictions by some observers that heavy industry would generate more job creation than what has actually happened. Today’s economy reliance on agriculture may account for some of Broomfeld’s low levels of economic development per capita – ranking twentieth out of twenty-eight municipalities included within Aurora-Denver Metro statistical area (2006). Broomfield was founded in 1868 by John Broomfield and his wife, Rachel. The town was named after John's ancestor, who had settled in the area in 1824. Broomfield grew rapidly due to its location on the edge of a coal mine and oil well field, and by 1870 it had a population of approximately 350 people. In 1876 the city of Boulder was incorporated into Broomfeld, and the two towns continued to merger until 1959 when Boulder became an independent city.
