The area rapidly became known for its gingham cotton shops that made traditional hand-woven items such as quilts and bedspreads until the early 21st century. Today many businesses still operate within this district including a variety of restaurants (including an excellent Italian restaurant), banks, pharmacies, a health insurer (Aetna), post office (opened in 1907), several churches (including one which has been operational continuously since 1886), public library (founded in 1895), and numerous other services including medical care ( Klinge & Meier Physician Associates) and marketing support services for agricultural entities such as grain elevator service(s). Broomfield also experienced significant economic growth during the late 20th century due to numerous military installations nearby such as Ft Bliss Army Base just east of town on I-25/U.S. Highway 66; Goodyear Aerospace Corporation's main campus located about 15 miles south on I-25; Air Force Research Lab at Edwards AFB 4 miles north on I-25/U.S./Highway 9 South; NATO Forces Command Headquarters 10 miles northwest on Ute Pass Road;and Denver Airpark 2 1/2 miles west of town off Interstate 25

Today, Broomfield is an agricultural center with a focus on hay production and cattle ranching. In 1938, Broomfield became one of fourteen municipalities within Boulder County when that county was created from portions of Weld County and San Miguel County. After years of numeric growth (due to annexation by other municipalities), population size remained relatively static until the early 21st century; however recent increases have been due largely to newcomers who have moved into or reestablished homes here since 2007 after experiencing strong economic growth elsewhere in Mesa County
Broomfield was founded in 1868 by Joseph Broomfield and his wife, Fannie. The town developed around the Broomfeld Paper Mill, until it closed in 1978. Today, the town is a bedroom community for the oil and gas industry.
