Broomfield is a town in Broomfield County, Colorado, United States. The population was 2,651 at the 2010 census. The town is named after Jacob Broomfeldt who founded the town in 1876. It is part of the Denver-Aurora-Lakewood Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in what would become Broomfield was John Stephenson who arrived on July 24, 1876. By 1880, there were 8 families living in the area and 50 businesses had been established by that time. In 1886, Broomfield became a municipality when it merged with Batavia Township to form the new municipality of Broomfield. On January 1, 1907, Manitou Springs was incorporated as a separate city within Broomfield and from then until May 15th 1959 all municipalities within Broomfield were under one government which was called "the City of Manitou Springs". On November 25th 1938 an earthquake struck the area killing 38 people and injuring more than 500 people including many residents of Durango which layadjacent to Broomeville at that time. Broom Field Airport opened on December 3rd 1941 serving Douglas Aircraft Company's R-4 Skyhawk flying training planes for World War II pilots from nearby Pikes Peak Airport (later known as Jefferson National Air Memorial Airport). With its high altitude and short runway this airport offered most private pilots access to flying opportunities unavailable at other airports during those early days of aviation research and development in North America! In 1951 Kipling High School opened located across South Broadway from Municipal Auditoriums location today home to City Hall before being moved east near I-25/Colorado State Route 26 where it currently stands! In 1964 local ordinance No 797 passed by Homecoming Committee establishing a Town Center District bounded by Eads Boulevard on the north; Main Street on the south; Broadway Avenue on the west; Indian Creek Drive on the east and Pinole Road on top
