Broomfield is a small town in the U.S. state of Colorado. The population was 2,912 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Broomfield County and part of the Denver-Aurora-Lakewood, CO Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to live in what is now Broomfield were Paleo-Indians who hunted and Gathering Creek passed through their territory on its way to the Animas River valley floor. The area that would become Broomfield was first settled by Europeans in 1858 when prospectors from Kansas City discovered gold near present day Leadville and called it Gold Hill after finding a large vein of gold coins at an old Spanish mission there. The name 'Broomfield' (from Dutch broom meaning "to sweep") was given to this settlement because early residents used brooms as hoes to clear ground for settlements and plows became necessary to move goods over snow cover during wintertime journeys across Clear Creek Canyon northwards into present day Aurora County. In 1865, silver was discovered in what is now Golden but nomining took place until 1868 when James Witherspoon organized a company with $5,000 dollars worth of silver bullion to search for it in hills above Silver Lake northeast of modern day Broomfield. This initial mining operation led directly to today's city limits as many mines were located within one square mile radius around Leadville including Harmony, Eldorado, Franklin and also two claims south of Golden along Brushy Creek which later became known as Hirschsprungs Rancho Adobe No 4 Mexican land grant dating back to 1839 when José María Hirschsprung purchased 116 acres east of Asotin where he built his adobe home named West Mesa Blanca which still stands today just east of Interstate 25 south bound on Park Road about two miles west from downtown Golden Valley). In 1905, Gold Rush era resident John Smedley established Smedley Brothers Coal Company with an original mine at Eldorado Hills northwest of Golden Valley that produced coal until 1916 when it closed due partisan warfare between American Republicans and Democrats over control of local roads that had been opened up by Republican Senator James Fenton who controlled Mining District 8 (at then base camp below Eisenhower Reservoir) while Democrat Mayor Hiram Johnson controlled Building District 1 (in downtownGolden). When Republican Congressman Charles Evans Hughes won reelection against Democratic challenger James Garmon he promise not open any more mines without Congressional approval so both companies met outside Denver in March 1906 where they finalized terms under which Smedley Bros Mines would remain profitable while Garmon Mine would be abandoned completely leaving only four feet depth underground at current site producing only sandstone coal seams instead of rich gold stocks typical from other types Of Mines such as those operating during Gold Rush days such as Eagle Rock & North San Miguel Atrapa etc... In 1912 Garmon Mine reopened resulting in increased production due agains partisan warfare however another political dispute ensued soon afterwards over succession rights for prominent founder John Smedley's son Harry who died suddenly aged 28 years old unmarried leaving uncles Harold & Edwin behind taking legal control ending production finallyays reverting back to Sandstone Coal seams until Shut Down 1987 When World War I started America declared war on Germany on April 6th 1917 using President Woodrow Wilson's Taft–Hartley Act which provided military draft exemption for all Americans regardless race or religion addingbroomefieldsuchasettlementtothe listofminersonthefrontlinesofthewar .
