The name of the town comes from "broom" and "field" because of its location on the Broomfield Plateau near the confluence of two streams, Brush Creek and North Fork Winter Creek. The first settlers in Broomfield were farmers who arrived in 1864. soon after a boom-time for agriculture resulted in an influx of people and businesses into Broomfield from all over Colorado and Northern Mexico. Businesses included a brewery, grocery store, post office, grain elevator, Ford car dealership and other industrial enterprises. After World War II Broomfield experienced rapid growth as jobs opportunities increased in technology sectors such as plastics production and healthcare services. In recent decades however there has been a trend towards retirement living and decrease in job demand which has led to declines in population size; however this does not mean that economic decline has not taken place or that social life is not vibrant; it's just that there are more opportunities for employment within commuting distance now than when the town was founded. Broomfields history can be traced back to 1854 when Scandinavian immigrants settled on land northwest of Denver at what is now called Garden Park Junction (later renamed Arapahoe). They named their new settlement "Hjelmstad", meaning 'site where hemlock grows'. This name was changed to "BroomFIELD" when one of the first families bought land here in 1865. From this early day until current times many residents have contributed to making Broomfield what it is today: through business activities (such as farming, manufacturing or real estate), volunteerism (including those involved with local schools or community organizations), or civic engagement (most notably being members of city councils). Today’s Bohumilettes enjoy access to world-class education including both private and public institutions along with excellent restaurants – something they used to lack close by! The town moved from its original location on the east side of the Animas River to its current location on the west side of the river in 1876. The first post office was established in 1877. Broomfield became a municipality in 1903.
