Broomfield is a small town in the Front Range of Colorado, located about 30 miles east of Denver. The population was 9,839 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Broomfield-Jefferson County School District. The first settlers in what is now Broomfield were French Canadians who founded a trading post and villages in 1772 near present-day Telluride. In 1806, British general John Custer unsuccessfully attacked an Indian village in what became known as the Battle of Little Bighorn. As a result, General John Hagedorn ordered his 1st Brigade to march through Broomfield on their way to rout the Sioux at Fort Laramie. In 1892, Broomfield was named after Rear Admiral Amos J. Broome (1796–1868), Commandant of Portsmouth Naval Base and father of Rear Admiral Hiram S. Brooke (1873–1946). Commodore Amos J. Broome also served as Mayor from 1897 to 1899 and from 1907 to 1909; he was succeeded by his son Amos II. In 1916, during World War I, local pilots flying for America’s Central Flying Service helped supply munitions for the war effort when they took off from nearby Longmont Airport for targets in France and Belgium
On July 1, 1876, Broomfield was organized as a town by order of the Colorado General Assembly. The first public meeting was held on July 10th and conditions for incorporation were met. On October 8th, 1876, Broomfield became the 46th town in Colorado. The first post office was established in Broomfield on November 3rd and continued to be operated until 1907.
