It is located in Douglas County, Colorado on the edge of the 6,848 acre Park Service Preserve known as Broomfield Hills. The first people to live here were the Anasazi who built their homes along Pueblo Creek within sight of what is now Broomfield hills. From there they traded with other tribes and established relationships with them that lasted for many years. As early as 1200 BC, reports from traders travelling through this area noted that there were villages of people living near present day Broomfield. These Native Americans had knowledge about plants and animals which led to some form of trade or commerce between them and other civilizations throughout history. In 1872 Custer's cavalry discovered gold in nearby Arapaho National Grassland and began an exploration campaign that quickly yielded many findings including large amounts of silver bullion. This discovery caused great excitement among miners and entrepreneurs alike and soon transportation became available to bring ore back to Denver for processing into coins or jewelry. With new transportation came new opportunities for development in this small community; businesses sprang up around mining camps such as Keystone City (now Keystone) and Longmont while residences were erected along both sides of Pueblo Creek which served as general store, post office, hotel/inn, etcetera Growth continued until World War II when resources began to run low due to over-production by American industry combined with international competition. At this point most residents emigrated or left for greener pastures elsewhere but a few have lingered until today thanks to various donations by local families.

In 1870, Brush County was organized, and Brush Valley became part of that county. The population of Broomfield grew rapidly after railroad construction began in the area in the early 1880s.
