Broomfield is a small town in Rocky Mountain National Park, located in the eastern edge of Colorado. The population was 1,499 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Denver-Aurora-Lakewood, CO Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to live in what is now Broomfield were the Anasazi and Pueblo peoples. These groups had been living there for centuries when European settlers arrived in 1859. At first, they opened up some of the land for farming but soon realized that this could not be done without irrigation from nearby reservoirs and rivers. They became interested in fur trade and commerce with other parts of America and Europe as well. In 1861, they approved a request by Colonel John Evans to build a military fortification on their lands to protect them from Apache raids. The fort was built named Fort Collins after Lieutenant Governor George Hickenlooper who donated land for it. Meanwhile, another group of Europeans had moved into the area around Broomfield and called themselves the "Mormons." They came here because they wanted to start an agricultural society based on tilling soil instead of relying on hunting grounds that were constantly being raided by Native Americans. When they arrived, many people didn't believe in their religion so they had to struggle until 1870 when Brigham Young authorized them to set up a mission station near present day Broomfeldt (then called Fillmore). Thereafter, many Mormons started coming here because it offered good grazing land or because there was access to water supplies that weren't available anywhere else in Rockies country. In 1875, one man named Edward Robinson bought about 2 square miles (5 km2) of land east of today's town center from Arapaho Indians for $1 million dollars which he used as his ranch house and farmstead known as Robinson Ranch until his death in 1907*. This purchase made Broomfield one of the most important Mormon settlements outside Salt Lake City*! It wasn't until 1912 when an electric company decided to build its own substation near present day Westminster* that things really started heating up around here! Electricity finally came through hereto help make possible new homes, businesses and schools like Wilson High School which opened its doors on September 15th 1915*. Today there are still some old buildings left over from those days such as The Masonic Temple which still stands next door to our high school*! But even though life has changed drastically since then*, Broomfield has managed to keep Its sense of community**.*
