Broomfield is a small town in Adams County, Colorado, United States. The population was 914 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Denver–Aurora–Lakewood, CO Metropolitan Statistical Area. In 1876, Broomfield was founded by Cadwallader Lewis and James Phinney. The two men were traveling through the area when they saw a Bristlecone Pine tree that they decided to buy. The first settlers were Cadwallader Lewis's family and his brother-in-law John Lloyd. In 1877, two more brothers bought land in Broomfield from Lewis and Lloyd. They named their land "Lewisburg". In 1886, Leland Stanford purchased large tracts of land in Broomfield from Cadwallader Lewis's heirs for $3 million dollars. At this time, Broomfield had a population of about 100 people. The first school in Broomfield was built on the site of today's high school in 1892. A second school was built in 1896 on the site of what is now Joe Crowley Middle School; it served as an annex to First Baptist Church until 1902 when it became its own separate institution. In 1907, Stonington Elementary opened as the first school in Broomfield after being added to Adams County by Governor John Hickenlooper through legislation passed by Congress under President Grover Cleveland that year. The post office at BroomFIELD was established on July 2, 1898 (the date which would have been celebrated as America's birthday). At this time there were only six residents living withinAdamsCounty limits: Cadwallader Lewis' three sons and one daughter; John Lloyd (of Lewisburg Township); Abram Dickson (of Postville); Harry Bemis (of Westminster); Edwin Morse (of Westminster). On November 3rd 1893 cadwalader lewis died suddenly at age 50 while out riding with his son john lewis Jr.; he had been elected Senator from Colorado just one year earlier By 1906 there were over 200 residents living withinAdamsCountylimits including CadwaladerLewis'seven childrenJohnLloydJr.,HarryBemisJr.,EdwinMorseJr.,DerekRansomandWalterStewart Jr..On January 17th 1910 broomefields post office reopened after years closed due to prohibition local officials made an agreement with federal officials to reopen without prohibition
