Brighton was founded in 1879 by J.D. Tolson and his family after they left Trinidad, Colorado to start a new life in Greeley County. The original plat for Brighton was filed on November 12, 1879 and approved on December 4th by Chalk River District Court Judge James Ladd as part of the final platting of Chaffee County. It consisted of only two lots - one east of US 6 and one west of said road - with an area of . Brighton, Colorado is located in the Rocky Mountains of north-central Colorado. It was founded by James H. Fenton in 1874 as a small ranch town on the banks of the Gunnison River. By 1907, Brighton had grown to include a population of about 2,500 people and was renamed for its location on a longitude line that runs from Great Salt Lake to summit of Aspen Mountain. In 1951, Brighton became an incorporated municipality and in 2001 it absorbed the neighboring towns of Aspen and Park City. The community is known for its wide range of industries including agriculture (mainly cattle), manufacturing (including firearms and ammunition), paper products, construction materials, oil production, and tourism. The first residents of Brighton were farmers who arrived during the gold rush era in 1848. They supplemented their income with livestock raising, mining, and logging operations until 1880 when railroads brought new opportunities to the area. The boom period ended with World War I but resumed after hostilities ended; however, it wasn’t until 1920 that employment really began to increase due to sound business practices at local mines such as Minington Mines & Smelting Company which developed lead ore into coins and jewelry products for various U.S., Mexican, Chilean silver companies. During this time also other businesses such as breweries (Asheville Brewery) came online providing needed services during prohibition while others like the Harry Wertheimer Bakery prospered thanks to advances in refrigeration technology which made baked goods store longer without spoilage or freezer malfunctioning During this time much development occurred in downtown Brighton including: Hastings School District No 1 building completed 1865; First National Bank Building built 1915; Anschutz Electric Light Plant built 1923 In 1951 United States Highway 100 was extended westward from Aspen through Brighton forming what is now called I-25W The current facilities at Mesa Verde Arsenal are dedicated to defense purposes following World War II when much wartime munitions production took place here including plutonium production at Oak Ridge National Laboratory
Brighton, Colorado was founded in 1876 by the Greeley Navigation Company. The company built a wharf on the current site of Brighton and developed it into a small town. In 1906, the town incorporated and became part of the Denver-Aurora-Lakewood metropolitan area.
