Brighton, Colorado is located in the Rocky Mountains of western Colorado. The town was founded in 1879 by Andrew Findlay and his wife, Jane. It became a non-voting city charter member in 1903. The population of Brighton grew to about 3,000 by 1950. In that year, the United States Congress passed the Gun Control Act of 1934 which banned most handguns except for those registered with federal government agencies and those used in law enforcement or military purposes. The act also required all gun dealers to sell only pistols that were registered with the National Firearms Act (NFA). Despite this prohibition, trafficking in unregistered firearms continued until 1966 when renewed NFA registrations made it fully legal to engage in such activity. In 1990, under Mayor Bob Koehler’s leadership, Brighton enacted an ordinance banning open carry of handguns on city streets. This ordinance has been amended several times since its enactment but remains effective today. Brighton, Colorado is a small town in the counties of Mesa and Douglas. The population was 712 at the 2010 census. Brighton's history dates back to 1892 when it was named after Brighton, England. In 1907, the first post office in Brighton opened and remained open until 1955. The town has had only two other residents for more than fifty years: Bob Vail (1931-2001) who operated a contractor services business from his home and Lori Peterson (born 1960) who has worked as a seamstress and domestic servant. The first permanent settler in what is now Brighton was James Ahern who arrived on horseback on May 21, 1892. Mr. Ahern surveyed the area that would become Albion County and founded Albion Springs on July 3, 1892. He also established Albion Park which still stands today outside of town limits. In 1915, a post office called "Aurora" was established in response to Mrs Justice Holmes' recommendation that communities be developed in central Mesa County to serve people with limited access to mail service due to the San Miguel River floodplain. On January 1, 1927, Albion Avenue became an official street name following adoption by the City Council of Aurora as part of their plan to improve public transportation within city limits. In 1935, John Pittleman bought 640 acres north of present-day Brighton for $5 per acre from Hilda Joplin for use as livestock land for her cattle operation known as Joplin Downs Rancho de los Animales de la Trinidad near Lionhead Reservoir State Park; this ranch later became part of private land holdings belonging to Ranches Incorporated owning over 3 million acres across six states including Colorado! From 1945 until its sale in 1978 it lay fallow while portions were leased or used by various businesses such as Tractor Supply Co., Continental Airlines Headquarters during their time at Denver International Airport between 1976-1978 then Roycroft Industries before finally being sold outright to Natural Gas Resources Development Company where it remains currently located today just east of I-25 exit 214!
