By 1903, there were over 50 businesses in Brighton and it had a population of 100. The first school opened in 1908 and the first doctor arrived in 1912. In 1916, the United States entered World War I and on September 3rd of that year, Brighton became one of five towns within Colorado to declare themselves an "all-out war zone". On October 7th of that year, only four days after declaration went into effect, seven residents were killed when a train derailed at milepost 10 on the Hamilton County line. On November 12th of that year troops from Fort Lyon arrived to take up arms against Spanish forces retreating from San Miguel de Allende during Mexico's Revolution. A day later natives led by José Arceaco attacked a detachment of Mexican national guard near Brighton but they were repulsed with help from American soldiers under General Pershing who ordered Arceaco to retreat rather than fight Americans alone. Aftermath of this skirmish saw more than 20 Civilian Conservation Corps workers arrive to clear land for housing development which began soon afterwards In 1947, President Harry Truman signed Executive Order 9348 which forbade discrimination against citizens based on race or color anywhere within America's borders including Brighton In 1970s and 1980s much growth took place with new subdivisions being built as well as schools and businesses opening up . Mayor Bob Hirschman worked hard to keep things moving forward while also trying to maintain community spirit The late 1990s brought about significant problems with methamphetamine labs operating out of apartments along State Route 26 In 2001 Hastings resident Rick Noland successfully campaigned for city council seat vacated by Mayor Bob Hirschman Noland won handily becoming the first openly gay person ever elected as mayoralty in Colorado
