Brighton, Colorado is a small town located in the Sawatch Range of the Rocky Mountains. It is named after George H. Brighton, an American businessman who donated land for the town. The population of Brighton was 909 as of 2000. The first people to live in Brighton were Native Americans who hunted and gathered resources near the present-day town site. In 1871, Mr. and Mrs. John Atherton built their home on what is now US Highway 6 north of the town limits. They were followed by other settlers, most notably Mr. Harry Mixer and his wife Edith Fenton Mixer, who both arrived in 1870 from Illinois with their children Alice and Harry Jr.. The township was organized on April 14, 1872 when citizens petitioned to form a village based on their experiences living around Fort Laramie Lake (now Telluride). On July 4th, 1875, it incorporation was granted by the 8th Judicial District Court following a hearing at which Mr. Mixer testified that he became interested in forming an incorporated village because he saw that there were many abandoned buildings in Gunnison County that could be used for housing or schools; this led him to believe that Brighton would have similar opportunities should it become an incorporated community like Telluride had done back then! In 1886, James Dickey settled along US Highway 6 east of bounds of current-day Brighton and opened up a general store which has been continuously operating since then! In 1895 Charles Goodyear started farming near where US Highway 6 intersects with Cherry Creek Road today; his farm continues to be operational to this day! By 1904 there were over 20 businesses open within downtown Brighton! Like most small towns during those decades, Burlington (present-day Aspen) grew rapidly due to annexation by Brighton through annexation proceedings held before various court cases throughout its history! On May 5th 1915 Captain Jens Olesen departed from Seattle bound for Ft Lewis,, CO via Salt Lake City aboard USS flagship Enterprise (CV-6) carrying food for troops stationed at Canton Junction Utah Territory during World War I; his ship ran into trouble en route and eventually stranded off White Sands Reef California about 350 miles southeast of San Francisco objectives occupied by Ulysses S Grant’s Expeditionary Force!! Commodore Dewey ordered all available warships under Rear Admiral William Cushing includingUSS Constitution (CVL-40),USS Monitor (CA-37),USS Perry (LCS-3)and USS Ponce(AGI-1)to pursue but no one made contact!! Commodore Dewey called upon First Lieutenant Clarence King III USMC commanding detachmentBattery A Company 2nd Battalion 11th Marines attached USS Tacoma(CVE-4)in order to provide cover for rescue attempt!!! After several hours struggling through heavy seas with no sign of any help being forthcoming NO LIFE WAS SAID TO ME BY ANYONE ON THE WRECK FOR OVER TWO HOURS!!!! Brighton, Colorado is a town located in San Miguel County, Colorado, United States. The population was 2,898 at the 2010 census. Brighton was founded in 1887 by J.W. and Fannie Ayer as Albion Springs. It was named for the English city of Brighton on the Sussex coast. The town had a post office from 1886 until 1907. In 1912, it incorporated as a town under the name Albion Springs and remained so until 1925 when it changed its name to Brighton because of the nearby city of that name. The first mayor of Brighton was Wm Gentry Murry. The current mayor is Rick Spriggs with a term expiration date of 2020
The first permanent white settlement in what is now Brighton, Colorado was established in 1868 when the United States Army Corps of Engineers built a military fort on the banks of the Pueblo River. The fort served as a landing and staging point for soldiers heading west to fight in the Mexican-American War. In 1875, theArmy transferred ownership of the fort to private individuals and it slowly declined in functionality over time. In 1886, USGS employees filed a lawsuit against Major General John Sutter for violating Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo land grants by building an irrigation canal across from present-day Pueblo City. The case went to trial and Sutter was found guilty but received a letter of pardon from President Grover Cleveland. That same year, USGS employees founded the first agricultural society in what is now Brighton. In 1912, USGS Employees organized what is now known as The American Forestry Society (AFS) to help promote forest management throughout western Colorado. AFS helped establish forests around Fort Collins, Loveland, Englewood and Greeley before becoming defunct in 1978. In 1917, USGS Employees organized what is now called The National Park Service (NPS) to help manage national park resources such as parks and monuments across western Colorado. NPS helped create Mesa Verde National Park in 1949 and Glenwood Springs National Park in 1967 before becoming defunct in 2005.
