Brighton, Colorado is a town in San Miguel County, Colorado, United States. The population was 1,527 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Metropolitan Denver Area. Brighton began as a small farming community in 1887 on the north bank of the Arkansas River between what is now Brighton and Garden City. The original name of the community was Horseshoe Bend after a bend in the river where horseshoes were once made. In 1901, when Brighton became a city, it changed its name to honor General George Armstrong Custer who had died during World War I and whose remains were brought to America from Mexico City. The first resident to arrive in Brighton was Wm. Fenton who landed his ship on July 8th 1870 aboard "Sebastian". The first gun shop opened in 1907 and it remained open until 2003 when it closed due to financial difficulties. In that year, Smith & Wesson bought out the store's owners and reopened it as an independent firearms store under the same name which still operates today with additional locations throughout southern Colorado including Westminster (Colorado), Aurora (Colorado), Jefferson (Colorado), Fort Collins ( Colorado), Trinidad ( Colorado) and Lakewood Village (Colorado). During prohibition era gun control laws were tightened making Brighton one of few towns in western San Miguel County not compliant with state law prohibiting possession or sale of alcoholic beverages without a license. Gun shops continued operations despite this regulation however because they could still sell ammunition tax-free to those who possessed an exemption certificate from local government authorities; this allowed them to generate revenue while avoiding possible prosecution for tax evasion.

In 1907, they changed it to Brighton because of its location on the coastal plain between Long Beach and Venice Beach. In 1938, The Pistol Owners Protection League (POPL) was founded as a result of this legislation to promote responsible firearm ownership among civilians. In response to this new law enforcement regulation, many manufacturers developed coveralls specifically designed for employment within law enforcement agencies – these garments would often be worn below the waistband beneath clothing such as pants or overalls

The town of Brighton was founded in 1864 by Father James Hickey and the Sisters of Mercy. The first post office was established in 1865, and the town name was changed to Brighton in 1867. In 1886, the first electric light came to Brighton, and a year later, the first water system was installed. The population exploded after World War I when many people moved to the area to work on new projects such as the Colorado River Project. The population decreased during the 1920s due to factors such as Prohibition and an economic slump. During World War II, Brighton was one of several towns in Colorado Springs that acceptedAAFCHAPTER-15: THE BOSTON MASSACRE Many soldiers from nearby Fort Collins were stationed at Brighton until they left for war in late 1942 or early 1943. On July 14, 1944, three days after Japan bombed Pearl Harbor, American forces discovered bodies near what is now known as Post Road 8 north of town along US Highway 24. As word spread about what had happened, citizens began arriving from all overColorado Springs to investigate. Most of those killed were military personnel stationed at nearby Ft Bliss or Atchison Barracks who walked into Japanese hands without knowing it. Many are still buried there today including Corporal Emile Ponce and Private First Class Leroy Sikes who perished trying to save others on July 14th 1944
