The first Europeans to settle here were men working for fur traders: David Thompson in 1804 and James Watt in 1814. In 1876 American miner Augustus Saint Vale bought land northeast of downtown from George Hearst and started construction on what would become his main business district: Gold Hill. He named it after himself – Haskell Hill – but development continued eastward until 1907 when construction began on Golden Gate Park (later renamed University Village). Development accelerated during World War II when Boulder became an important center for munitions production; factories such as Consolidated Edison's Rocky Hill Arsenal produced munitions including bombs that killed Americans during World War II

The city's founding story can be traced back to 1879 when American citizens George Custer and Cheyenne Chief Washakie traveled through Colorado on their way southward from Fort Laramie in Wyoming Territory towards Santa Fe down the Arkansas River Valley. They were met by two local farmers, Hyrum Smith and George Gillespie, who offered them lodging and provisions for the night while they hunted for deer around Mountniksion Creek. The next day they reached McNary Lake where they rested for dinner before continuing their journey onward that evening over open country until they came upon a small community known as Butte City about 9 miles (14 km) away on Horseback Ridge above Dodge Dam Reservoir. For two weeks during that winter Custer and his people had food enough only from game brought down by horseback riders while supplies arrived at fortipple acrossriver at Fort Bridger via packhorseloads of goods sent upriver every week or so by Army Colonel James Bridger; but on January 29th 1879 he received news from General Sheridan that stocks at Fort Bridger had run low due to an early spring floods upstream which destroyed many of Bridger's stores; so instead Brigadier General Miles ordered Captain Angier with 60 men led by Lieutenant Colonel John Chivington with four light cannons to march upriver on February 3rd into what is today called "Butte City". Thereupon Captain Angier found evidence that Assiniboine Indians had killed several hundred cowboys working near Dodge Dam prior to its construction; furthermore he learned that several thousand more head of cattle were being driven northward along this watershed each day past Dodge Dam towards Canon City under license from Major Andrew Stevenson - all without any resistance from either side! So upon verification of these reports against contemporary sourcesCaptain Angier decided not only did Butte City not exist but also no one had everlicited him or anyone else thereto!
