The name was derived from the nearby Boulder River which they believed would provide good water resources for their new community. The Frémonts were not alone in this decision- many other pioneers also chose to call their new settlement "Boulder" based on its location within easy reach of major rivers and mountains. By 1875, however, only about 50 people lived in downtown Boulder while over 1,000 people lived outside of the original city limits which included present-day Denver and Aspen. The development of oil rigs in Anadarko County during the late 1800s soon led to an increase in population growth throughout central Colorado; consequently, Downtown Boulder experienced rapid population growth during the late 19th century into the 20th century (Frazier 1972). This growth had serious impact on public transportation access which could no longer accommodate everyone who desired to live or work within downtown boundaries at that time; thus many residents relocated outlying areas around Downtown Boulder seeking more accessible infrastructure (Levin 1985). By 1903 there were only about 100 inhabitants living inside downtown walls while 1,500 people resided outside them according to Census data (Levin 1985).
