Boulder, Colorado is a city in the U.S. state of Colorado and the county seat of Boulder County. As of the 2010 census, its population was 823,521. The city is part of the Denver-Aurora-Lakewood MSA and is considered to be an important cultural center for Western Colorado and Rocky Mountain Region counties. Its downtown district has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1993. The first Europeans to visit what is now Boulder were construction workers on a road trip from St. Paul, Minnesota, on December 27, 1876. They named their new discovery "Boulder" after the nearby Mount Claremore National Monument which had been announced as a national park by President Ulysses S. Grant two months earlier on December 12th! The town started as just 15 people living in tents near what is now 10th Street and Broadway Streets with some stores being built along Foothills Boulevard just south of that intersection when gold was discovered in 1879! The first store in town was built by James Wiebe on First Avenue West! In 1880 there were over 100 businesses with 2 hotels/motels (the Grand Central Hotel and the State Capitol Hotel) opening up during that year’s Gold Rush! Downtown businesses flourished until 1906 due to prohibition which had prohibit alcohol sales starting in1892!!! During Prohibition many locals used their local breweries as hideouts but soon enough word got out about how well prohibition was working so several large breweries decided to open up shop outside of prohibition zones!! Starting with Grand United Microbrewery opened up at 17th & University Streets in 1905!! This brewery became one of most successful small brewers throughoutColorado during this time period filling all sorts of needs such as light beer, hard cider and wine!!! By 1928 they had closed down but reopened under different ownership at 2525 E 16th Street !! These days you can still find evidence left behind from these early days including: an original brewery building; a water tower from those years; postcards from those days; even some building bricks left behind!! During this time period also other places like Telluride began popping up including: Hazelden Brewery opened up at 1280 Arapaho Road east of Interstate 25; Golden Eagle Brewing Company opened up at 2500 East Union Avenue west of I-25; Keystone Keg Brewery Opened Up At 509 University Ave.; Allyn & Bacon Brewing Co., Inc., Opened Up At 1440 Webster Road northeast Of I-25 In 1957 Colorado voters passed Amendment 64 legalizing marijuana use statewide making it one of the most tightly regulated states in the country!!!! It wasn't until 1978 when Proposition 18 legalized gambling within cities limits making Boulder one of very few municipalities allowed to offer gaming!!!!!!!!!!!!! Today much older buildings once occupied by various businesses are still standing such as: Anheuser Busch Brewery Building Which Is Now A Park ; Masonic Lodge #1 Building Which Is Now A Bank ; And Yucca Tower Which Is Now A home For Themountain View School District
