By 1800 more than 100 English settlements had been established along the Front Range outside Denver; most were small frontier posts that functioned primarily as furriers and traders rather than as permanent settlements. In 1803–04 John Custer led an army against Ulysses S Grant during the Battle of Little Bighorn while stationed here; this event helped solidify Boulder’s stature within American society as a strategic location for military operations because it demonstrated Ulysses S Grant’s vulnerability to attack from behind enemy lines from his own home state
