The city is named for its original location, on the southern edge of Aspen Highlands, east of downtown and south of Englewood. Aurora is one of four municipalities that make up the Aurora-Centennial Township Community Development District. The first people to live in what is now Aurora were Native Americans who hunted and gathered game in the area. They built low huts out of earth and bark during winter to stay warm and protected from animals and weather. The first white men to come to this area were prospectors who discovered rich coal seams near Aspen in 1859. Coal mining became an important economic sector in Aurora after it was discovered that coal could be mined by running water through rock beds that had been drilled for oil wells. Aurora was incorporated as a village on March 4, 1871, when citizens of Aspen petitioned for incorporation. This was due to problems with access to water supplies which had led Tooele County to annex most of Auroras territory east of Aspen so there would be enough water available for pioneers new to this region. On November 15, 1871, voters approved incorporation by a wide margin and the village began operations under its new name of Centennial Village. The first post office opened in Centennial Village on December 1, 1871; it continued serving until 1907. In 1911, Centennial Village achieved city status when it annexed part of neighboring Park City into its municipal boundaries; this annexation made Centennial Village one of five cities within Denver metropolitan area (the others being Greenwood Village, Golden Square Shopping Center/Uptown Station Plaza/Anchor Bay), which increased its population from 2,500 residents in 1905 to over 12,000 by 1920 thanks largely to waves of immigrants arriving through Denver's rail terminals during World War I and II (eastern Europeans such as Poles, Slovaks and Ukrainians). Nowadays you can find plenty evidence both examples exist side by side so if you ever happen upon either place feel free too wander around!
