Aurora, Colorado is a city in Weld County, Colorado, United States. The population was 27,527 at the 2010 census. Aurora is the second most populous city in Weld County after Greeley and the tenth most populous city in Colorado. Aurora is part of theDenver-Aurora-Lakewood Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler to arrive in what is now Aurora was George Parkman on July 16, 1869. Parkman had come from Illinois and he and his family named their farm "Parkman's Ranch" after himself. After a few years of farming there, they decided to move into the town that would later be called Aurora because of its many lakes and hills that made it an excellent place to settle. In 1870, James Gifford built a log cabin on land which he donated to the town of Aurora for $1 per acre (0.50 km²). Gifford had come from England but his wife died soon after arrival in America so he took up permanent residence with his two children and their families: John and Jane Gifford were born in 1871; Harry Atherton was born on October 1, 1873; Sarah Atherton was born on December 5, 1875; Charles Wickersham arrived January 6th from Massachusetts three days before Christmas on board the ship "Eagle". He named his new home "Wickerham's Store". Throughout its early years as a small community, Aurora struggled to make ends meet because it lacked any kind of infrastructure such as roads or water resources - this led to several fires that destroyed many homes during its early years including one that burned down entire blocks of Commerce Street near what is now Pikes Peak Elementary School. In 1893 when Denver incorporated as a municipality boundary change gave Auroras borders along First Avenue south (west corner) then east (north corner), Business Square bounded by Belleview Avenue north (west corner), Northumberland Avenue east (south corner) then south (east corner), much of downtown became Aurelias business district with numerous stores located along First Ave South between Belleview/Northumberland avenues while other parts continued closer to downtown including northeast side around Sixth Street where numerous residences still stand today including Queen City Place Mansion today used by various governmental functions like City Council Chamber meeting space as well as private events & staff headquarters currently housing office space leased from Morrison & Foerster LLP

The first European settlers in what is now Aurora were French fur trappers who passed through the area on their way to prospect for fur in present day eastern Canada. The first settler in what would become Aurora was James Haggerty who arrived in 1824 and built a cabin on Lark Hollow Creek. A year later he married Martha Jane White and they moved to what would become known as Haggertyesville. In 1827, Johnnie Morey settled near today's downtown Aurora with his family. Morey became involved with local politics and served as mayor from 1830 to 1835 and again from 1840 to 1845 . He also developed land around present day Cherry Hill Road and founded more than 20 businesses including two breweries - Little Big Horn Brewery (1834) and Black Hills Brewing Company (1840). By 1850, about 100 people lived in what became known as Haggertyville while 150 people lived along current Cherry Hill Road. In 1854, Joice Hogg established herself at what would become known as Carroll Gardens after purchasing some 160 acres north of present day Cherry Hill Road from David Holmes Wilson Sr.. At that time Aurora had a population of only 10 residents but rapidly grew into an important community with a variety of businesses including millinery stores, groceries, saddlers' shops, physicians' offices and churches. On July 1stof that year Mr.- Masons lodge No 21G Scottish Rite erected an oratory thereon for services conducted therein by Revd.- Dr.- Fenton Waddell officiating under temporary direction by Mrs.- Joice Hogg assisted by Misses Maynard & Smith]. The first school Kindergarten was held on December 16th [1854] followed by First Grade on January 11th [1855] There was no public library then but since 1861 City Library has been open Sundays 8:00am until 3:30pm.] In 1860s when Denver began its rapid growth following its incorporation as a city it needed space so east side Indians living near where Central Park now stands were relocated east onto flatland leased from Major General George Armstrong Custer who granted them parcels bounded northeast by Broadway Avenue between Larimer Street/Flamingo Drive/Wadsworth Avenue/Pine Street corner]. This area now includes much of DowntownDenver It should be noted that many Citizens longed for opportunity yet could not get their hands on property because it was Controlled By Indian Tribes ].
