Aurora, Colorado is a city located inJohnson County, Colorado. As of the 2010 census, the population was 16,603. The city is the largest municipality in Johnson County by area and home to both Aurora Municipal Airport and Aurora-Colorado Springs Airport. It is also home to the University of Colorado at Aurora and Southwestern Colorado Community College. The first post office in Aurora opened on July 1, 1872. The current Post Office building was built in 1912 and has been used as a branch library since 1951. The name "Aurora" comes from two sources: First, it may come from Arapaho Chief's words "yaringa aurora," meaning "the dawn of dawn." Second, Auroras can be seen during summertime near Slough Mountain on the east side of town. Legend has it that when General Kearny's army retreated from Mexico City during the Mexican-American War in 1847, he stopped at this mountain for dinner before continuing his journey southward. This event is also mentioned in local lore as having spawned what is now known as Aurora Avenue (later Slough Boulevard). The first inhabitants of what would become Aurora were farmers who started arriving here around 1800 AD along with other early settlers such as David Capps and John Sweetwater. They arrived on horseback or via boat because there was no road available at that time! By 1875, some 400 families had settled hereabouts and began growing crops such as wheat and corn while working off small plots of land granted to them by their government representatives; these days most people remember a time when they could only purchase ½ acre allotments which gave them some semblance of control over their lives! In 1881 William Hogg organized a group called the Citizens' Committee for Better Land Management which aimed to improve conditions for pioneer farmers living west of Denver along Ute Creek including those living near present day Interstate 25! What followed next was an incredible amountof hard work put into getting this great parcel bounded north by Sheridan Street/Ute Road east by Wellington Street/Winthrop Road south by State Highway 114 (now I-25) – now part of US Highway 24 – annexed within Johnson County just 6 months later! In 1902 James Wirths purchased 3/8 mile northeast corner lot #1 from Amos Eaton for $525 being one among many purchases made throughout Johnson County during Wirths' tenure as Commissioner of Mines & Geology! With developments going on all around him back then (and still happening today), little did we know this man would go on to lead our fledgling city right into its future!! snipsnip… Continued below…. In 1907 Drury Jepson organized an amateur theatrical company called The Gaudium Players which performed plays like “Joseph Addison” and “Macbeth” under Leland Stanford’s direction until 1911 when he sold the company interest to Edward Harlan Folkman who renamed it League Of American Theatre Companies LLC (LATC)! In 1916 LATC merged with Shubert Playhouse Incorporated forming United Equity Productions whose mission statement read: “To create opportunities for artists everywhere through production stages including touring productions across America” !! These days you can still find showings taking place atlatcarchivesandeventscenter(at 715 S Wyoming St) every other week featuring Emerging NY Actors Andnonetheless LATC remains one helluva playhouse llc!!!! nopin … Continued below….
