Arvada, Colorado is a small town in the Denver-Aurora metropolitan area. The population was 24,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of theDenver-Aurora-Lakewood, CO Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first white person to live in what is now Arvada was Walter P. Pratt in 1876. Arvada started as a farming community with 12 residents in 1912. By 1920 it had grown to 100 residents and by 1940 it had reached its current size of 24,811 people. Arvada rests on an upland plateau that straddles the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains between downtown Denver and Auraria Village on the eastern edge of Lakewood Rancho Hills Estates subdivision on the west side of Aurora Heights neighborhood on both sides of Interstate 25 (Uptown/Northwest Side). The town began as a simple agricultural village with 12 families living around a well-established irrigation system designed by George Ritchie and built by his son John Ritchie when he became head contractor on the project in 1916. In 1920 there were over 150 people living here; today there are only about 50 left who trace their ancestry back to those early settlers including many prominent citizens such as Dr. Milton Eisenhower (founder of Eisenhower University), Harry Sargent (founder and CEO American Express) and Edwin Ladd (founder Continental Airlines). In 1940, when World War II ended and America entered into its own stage of social transformation, Arvada's growth slowed but did not stop altogether: during peacetime it grew from 2,000 residents to 5,000 within 10 years while during wartime it increased from 30 to 400 residents in just 4 years!
The city of Arvada, Colorado was founded in 1864 by John H. Arvada and others as the town of Ault. The original name for the city was Aultville, but it was changed to Arvada in 1868 because of objections from nearby Fort Lyon. In 1912, the city became a consolidated municipality with Aspen and Durango.
