Arvada, Colorado is a city in the U.S. state of Colorado and the county seat of Weld County. As of 2010, Arvada had a population of 153,827. The first permanent settler in what is now Arvada was Nicholas Van Arsdale who established his farm on July 24, 1864. The area now called Arvada was settled by pioneers primarily from England and Scotland who came to look for new land to homestead after the American Civil War ended in 1865. The town began as a small village near what is now the University of Northern Colorado campus in 1946 and rapidly grew into an incorporated municipality with its own government in 1949. In 1961, it became part of the Denver-Aurora-Lakewood Metropolitan Statistical Area; and then in 2003 it joined the Denver–Aurora-Lakewood Urban Community Zone as one of its three municipalities within that zone. In 2006, Arvada voted to become an open community which means all residents are free to vote regardless of race or color – making it one of just four cities nationwide to do so (the others being Boulder, Colo., Oakland, Calif., and Portland Oregon).
