Arvada, Colorado is a town in southern Colorado that was founded in 1876. The population of Arvada was 9,829 at the 2010 census. The name "Arvada" comes from the Spanish word "arderaje," meaning "ravine." The first settlers were Mexicans who came to Arvada in 1875 and built a cabin on what is now east side of town. Over time, other groups of immigrants also arrived, such as Germans and Irishmen. In 1907, Arvada became the first incorporated municipality in Southern Colorado. The early years of Arvada were difficult because it was near the end of a wagon road that had to be traveled over high mountains to get to Denver from southeastern Colorado. However, by 1910, when the railroad reached Arvada, business began to grow and people started moving into the town. By 1916, there were so many businesses in Arvadah that an election was held for a new city council. The new council selected its first mayor, Atherton Dickson. In 1932–1933 Baby Face Nelson (later Jesse James) spent his summer months living with his parents and grandparents in Arvadah after his father's death during World War I; he would later call this period "the happiest year my family ever had." That year saw some major changes within local society as well: two women won their initial bids for office when voters approved propositions #1 and #2 (the first municipally-owned grocery store opened up shop in Boulder), setting off a trend that continued through much of the 1970s when municipally owned stores generally closed down due to budget cuts or competition from larger grocery chains (though some still survive). In 1937 John Lennon gave one performance at University Auditorium before going on tour with Paul McCartney across America; after this show he went into hiding with Yoko Ono until their divorce was finalized five months later It wasn't until 1967 that Rick Warren developed his religion called Christianity here - which has continued strong today despite multiple attempts by organized religions (like Islam) to take over large chunks of downtown property around milepost 6 along Interstate 25
