Wirtz began building some small homes near center square as early as 1888 and erected a schoolhouse on Main Street in 1890 which served as the town's first courthouse until 1912 when a more modern structure replaced it. By 1902 there were over 100 small businesses with an aggregate value of $1 million (2010). In 1907 Arvada incorporated as a city, becoming one of the most populous cities within Colorado borders at that time with over 100,000 residents living within its limits including about 60% of its workforce being employed outside the city limits which contributed significantly to its growth during this time period; much like other rapidly growing municipalities across Colorado during this era such as Golden (1896-1924), Aurora (1925-1960), Commerce City (1961-1991) and Westminster (1992-) all among others%.
