The Yucca Valley Museum of Firearms at 9702 North Indian Avenue inYucca Valley, California preserves and offers research on a wide variety of firearms, including handguns. The museum is open to the public Saturday 9am-5pm and Sunday 1-5pm. In 1892 when the US Geological Survey began mapping Yucca Valley, they found highland limestone sitting atop an old salt mine that was also home to a large ranching community known as White Sands. After World War I ended, the range closed down because of lack of appropriations from Congress. In 1933, General Leslie Groves ordered all US military surplus pistols sold off to be destroyed due to fears that Nazi Germany would build their own version of pistols using technology developed by Austrian arms manufacturer Steyr (today Sauer & Co.). This led to the Gun Runners' Crusade which saw more than 2 million handguns seized by law enforcement agencies across America between 1933 and 1934. Many were returned unopened or used for contraband purposes such as ammunition sales without proper documentation or registration with state police forces. In 1941, after Japan bombed Pearl Harbor and resulting American entry into World War II, President Franklin D Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066 which prohibited any persons from owning firearms within fifty miles of Washington DC without prior approval from local authorities who would have authority to confiscate firearms if needed for law enforcement purposes or national security purposes (the so-called "Guns N' Roses" rule). This order effectively terminated handgun ownership within American Samoa except among Native Hawaiians who continued to possess weapons until 1946 when they were banned under newly implemented US gun control regulations following Hawaii's admission into the United States as an independent nation status quo ante had been violated). By 1949 all Japanese Americans living in mainland America had been removed from census rolls so firearm possession was not subject to Registration or Disposal laws like it had been before 1940 excluding those residents who remained inside Japanese domiciles within commuting distance thereof).
