In 1892, Donner Party II came across the Sierra Nevada while exploring winter homelessness route between Sacramento and Phoenix through Yosemite National Park before descending into what is now Kern County during their travel upriver to Fort Bragg (now Bakersfield). By 1940, there were over 1,500 families living in Yucca Valley according to census reports. The community had large cattle ranches that produced milk, hay, woolen fabrics, eggs (for meatpacking), vegetables (including oranges and apples), and other products for local markets. Many residents also worked on American Petroleum Company's land orchards or collected firewood from nearby forests for their homes heating needs during winter months. 2
