In 1769, Mexican soldiers under Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna discovered what is now Yucca Valley and named it after a small valley in New Mexico. After Mexico lost its independence from Spain, the United States took control of this region in 1848. The first Americans to move into Yucca Valley were wagoners and miners who came across the mountains during their journey westward. In 1851, Stephen Folsom founded Folsom Mines, which became one of the largest copper mines in California. By 1862, there were over 100mining families living in Yucca Valley.
Yucca Valley, California is a small town in the San Joaquin Valley located about 25 miles east of Fresno. The population was 4,491 at the 2010 census[1] and has grown rapidly since then, reaching 5,874 by the 2014 census. After the war most of them left to find new homes because of economic hardship. In 1951 a group of investors bought land in Yucca Valley from the federal government and began developing it into a city known today as Fresno. In 1957 an annex was added to Fresno which made Yucca Valley an official city with its own police department and fire department as well as public utilities like water and power that continue today. By 1959 there were more than 1,000 people living in Yucca Valley.[2] The economy of YuccaValley has been centered around agriculture since its founding providing jobs for local farmers as well as processors throughout California’s Central Coast region exporting their products all over North America (and sometimes beyond). Today approximately 60% of the workforce is employed within agriculture-related industries including processing pork bellies (the world’s second largest), grapeseed oilseed production (the top crop) and almonds; while 20% are employed within nonagricultural sectors such as hotel/motel services or IT services. Growth rates have been steady but modest overall given that housing costs have continued to increase faster than incomes; however this may change soon with plans by developers to build thousands more homes in what is already one of Northern California’s most liveable communities

In 1875, American prospectors discovered gas reserves near Yucca Valley when drilling for oil in nearby Kern County. This led to rapid construction throughout the region during the late 1800s as various companies drilled for oil and gas. The oil industry closed down around 1930, but left behind a legacy of infrastructure development that still exists today including hospitals and schools in Yucca Valley.
