The area now occupied by Yucca Valley was originally part of what is now Tulare County; it was organized into Kern County on April 3, 1850 under Governor Pio Pico. A townsite was designated at milepost 5 on Uinta Road east-southeast of present-day Hope Ranch when county officers met to organize new territory around Kern River below Sierra Madre Mountains; this landing place served as a stopping point for early travelers journeying upriver from their mining operations at Salt Lake City and Sacramento via El Sobrante Pass along today's Interstate 15 northbound to Placerville then downriver past Morongo Basin to Yuba City where they embarked aboard steamboats across Modoc Creek for points eastward along today's Sacramento River to San Francisco Bay Gate through Discovery Cove which lies just beyond Point Lobos National Monument south boundary - leavingYucca Valley withStratholme Township on its eastern border - setting off an era characterized by cooperation among government officials seeking development opportunities within their respective jurisdictions which continue up through present day business transactions with Santa Clara County Government Center located inside downtown San Jose
