In 1955, development began adjacent to present-day Yucca Lake with the construction of a power plant and other infrastructure necessary for continued growth within the then newly created area now known as downtownYucca Valley; this led to increased traffic congestion on Highways 99 and 118 that has still been experienced today since those days. After more than fifty years of continuous growth, downtownYuccaValley had grown so large that it no longer fit within its original boundaries; consequently, much of what used to be called "DowntownYuccaValley" now includes portions of northernYucatán Peninsula where there are no reminders or citations from prior thereto such as city hall or public schools (although some shopping areas may still have these identifiers). Yucca Valley is a small town in Orange County, California, located about 15 miles northeast of downtown Los Angeles. It was founded in 1879 by Don Pedro Crespo and his brother Manuel. The name comes from the Yucca tree, which is found here. The valley was first populated by Native Americans. The area now known as Yucca Valley was part of the Mexican territory of Baja California until 1846 when it passed to United States control as part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. In 1879, Don Pedro Crespo and Manuel García discovered potash deposits west ofyer on what is now the border between Yucca Valley and Porterville. The discovery led to the founding of a nearby town named for them both - Yucca Valley. Today, Yucca Valley's economy depends largely on agriculture and tourism; its population stands at about 4,000 people. The valley has several tourist attractions including: Mount Whitney National Park (the highest peak in California), Joshua Tree National Park (the largest canyon in North America), Golden State Drive (a scenic route that runs through much of southern Orange County), Foothill Ranch State Historic Park (home to one-fifth of all American poppies grown), Grapeseed Oil Field and Kern River Museum; as well as many smaller villages scattered throughout the valley floor.
