The fertile soil and mild climate made it a good place to grow crops and provide milk for local cows. By 1850, the Yuba River had been named one of the most important rivers in California because it provided water for many small towns and villages along its course. The first known settlement in the Yuba Valley was called White’s Station, located on the banks of the river just north of present-day Fresno. In 1851, John Fenton established a ranch on what is now Hwy 49 near White’s Station. This initial agricultural success led to other settlements being founded throughout the valley, including North Eastville (1852), West Humboldt (1854), Southwark (1855), Cottonwood (1857) and Garland(1859). In 1862, another group of Californios discovered gold at Sutter’s Mill in nearby Sacramento; this discovery helped spur development within the Yuba Valley as miners began moving into this region to find new opportunities for wealth and employment. The following year saw an influx of Mexican immigrants when General Antonio López de Santa Anna ordered his forces to invade California during his attempt to overthrow Ulysses S Grant’s presidency. As a result of these events, many people from Mexico moved into and around Yuba City in order to find economic opportunity. As more people moved into and around Yuba City, there was an increased demand for food services such as grocery stores, cafes and restaurants. This increase in business brought about changes within society which affected everyone living within its boundaries: businesses started hiring more individuals who were not only skilled laborers but also entrepreneurs who wanted their businesses to grow organically. In addition, over time social norms changed which helped define how women should behave both inside and outside their homes; as a result, women began working alongside men starting at a much earlier age than previously thought possible! After World War II ended with Japan's surrender on September 2nd 1945, many Americans returned home; however, few realized that they still had exactly one year remaining before their country would be re-occupied by Japan again! In 1925, construction began on the largest dam ever built at Lake Oroville which formed part of the Central Valley Project; this left little opportunity for local businesses to thrive during prohibition years because production stopped completely around 1933 due to Prohibition laws prohibiting alcoholic beverages. However, revival efforts have begun over recent decades with development of new industries such as agribusinesses and tourism through initiatives like The Greenbelt Project which has seen increased development near lakeside communities like Locketown and White Rock Springs since its inception in 2006
