In 1850, the U.S. Army constructed a fort in what is now downtown Yuba City to protect settlers from Native Americans who had started to move into the area in recent years. In 1852, Yuba City became part of Sacramento County and later became part of San Joaquin County when that county was created from parts of Sacramento and San Joaquin counties on January 1, 1865.
