Yorba Linda, California is a city in Alameda County, California, United States. The population was 47,028 at the 2000 census. It is the largest city in San Francisco Peninsula outside of San Francisco and has been the county seat since 1856. The first Europeans to visit Yorba Linda were Spanish missionaries in 1768. The area now known as Yorba Linda was part of Rancho de las Pulgas (now part of Livermore), grants given by Governor Manuel Nieto to Juan José Cámpora and other Spanish Franciscan Fathers. In 1801, Rancho dos Angeles Mexican land grant was made available for purchase by General Josiah Whitney and his heirs. On July 14th, 1851, Yorba Linda became a town when it was incorporated as such from parts of Shasta County by vote of its citizens. In 1905 gold was discovered at Sutter's Mill onshore about north of Yorba Linda; this led to an influx of miners into the area which caused some homes and businesses around Sutter's Mill to be destroyed or abandoned. Mines stopped production after 1911 because water quality problems with nearby hills made extraction unsafe; however small amounts continue to be produced today. On November 3rd, 1942 local resident Elmer Rice woke up early on Thanksgiving morning to see Japan bomb Pearl Harbor without warning phenomena- he called out "All hands report for duty!" As more people heard him call out this they realized that something unusual had occurred- most likely a false alarm but still alarming nonetheless! After Japan bombed Pearl Harbor there quickly followed worldwide hysteria over World War II including panic within America especially as information leaked out leading many people believe that our country would become involved in war if not for that attack! One can only imagine what could have happened if we did fight World War II had Japan not bombed Pearl Harbor!
One interesting aspect about Yorba Linda during its history are all three post offices which opened there: Post Office No 1 (1856-1857), Post Office No 2 (1858-1859) and Post Office No 3 (1921). All three post offices closed except for Post Office No 4 which reopened on October 10th 1921 due to the opening of Interstate 5. There have been a number of changes take place throughout both the 20th century and 21st century affecting the demographics and economy within Yorba Linda.< ref name=" communityChange THROUGH TIME">1920s - There were no major changes during this time period.
