Yorba Linda is a city located in the northern portion of Orange County, California. The population was 54,847 at the 2010 census. The first Europeans to visit Yorba Linda were shipwrecked on Christmas Day in 1795 by Captain James Cook after his ill-fated Discovery Expedition. In 1887 the United States Post Office was founded in Yorba Linda with office space and mail service to both Santa Clara County and Orange County. The City of Yorba Linda incorporated as a city in 1912. The discovery of oil near Hancock Park gave rise to industry around 1917 when an early developer found crude oil under an old oak tree along Interstate 680 between Yerba Buena Vista Boulevard and State Route 237 just east of downtown. At that time there were only two small refineries on Long Beach Island: Shell Oil Company's refinery on Point Conception Avenue near Highway 101 (now Anza Road) and Refining & Storage Company's site at what is now 20th Street crossing I-680 about 3 miles north of downtown for processing milk from local farms into manufactured items such as Listerine toothpaste or Kodak film

The name "Yorba Linda" comes from an Indian word meaning "place where the waves crash." Yorba Linda was founded by Captain James Cook in 1778 as part of his attempt to explore and map the coastline of North America. As Captain Cook's explorations went on, he became increasingly interested in what lay beyond his own shores and soon began to make contact with various Native American nations along the way. In 1803, while exploring southern California,Captain John C. Fremont met Mexican General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna at the mouth of San Juan River and agreed to sign an treaty that recognized Mexican control over most of California north of Baja Mesa (the current border between Orange County and Riverside County). The Treaty also allowed for trade between Mexico and British Columbia without being subject to Spanish law. After this agreement was ratified by both parties, Captain Cook surveyed much of present-day Yorba Linda with his survey team before departing for good in 1806. The first European sighting of Yorba Linda occurred on September 3rd, 1778 when Captain James Cook sailed into Whatcom Bay near present-day Port Orchard and observed land that he thought might be India or Japan. He called it Yerba Buena ( literally "good place") because its location – about midway between Point Reyes National Seashore east shoreline and Point Conception west shoreline – made it ideal for shipwrecks due to its dangerous shoals noted by sailors since Preclassic times. A year later on October 6th however, during his third voyage around Cape Horn (during which he charted parts of northwestern North America),Cook mistakenly mistook Yerba Linda Island for Isla Victoria - which is now San Francisco - leading him to believe that Isla Victoria was some kind of peninsula instead of an island. In 1817 USS Constitution Commander David Dixon decided to investigate reports that gold may be existent along coastal Southern California settlements including Yorba Linda including then known as Donner Party member Jedediah Smith's Ranch at Mount Diablo just south/northwestofpresent day City Limits area today portion known as Redlands / Norwalk combined with Eureka Creek headwaters region today's Simi Valley area all within modern Ventura County boundaries .On July 5th1817 Commodore Matthew Perry anchored off capePoint Conception(nowRedlands)and dispatched USS Larimer under Acting Master Commandant Larkinwith 4 boats toward Geysir Gulch area adjacentDonner Pass about 80 miles southeasttoday'sModocCountyin central CA,.
