Yorba Linda is a city in Orange County, California, United States. The population was 56,811 at the 2010 census. In 1875, John Sutter arrived with his family from Northern California and started Rancho San Carlos Rey del Norte near present day Mount Diablo Avenue in north Yorba Linda. They began trading goods with local Indians and selling land around their rancho for cattle, sheep, horses and other livestock products which they shipped back down the coast to Oroville or Stockton where they were sold again into slavery before reaching American shores via Genoa or Baja California ports On January 1, 1850 Californio José Castro founded Rancho Santa Ana de Anza about 8 miles (13 km) northeast of present day Yorba Linda along Mission Road Novena which became Carretera Real en route between San Francisco and Mexico City On October 16th 1860 Mexican troops under Colonel Antonio Lopez invaded Upland County here when Governor Manuel Micheltorena issued orders to do so following reports that Americans had been aiding Mormon missionaries opposing Mexican rule After weeks of skirmishing members of both sides developed mountainside bluffs overlooking each other’s positions which served as fortifications until 1862 when Lopez surrendered this area back to Mexico On November 20th 1863 Mexican General Antonio Lopez signed an agreement with US Major James Wickersham agreeing not to further resist during peace negotiations ensuing from American Civil War that ended with Texas annexation In 1870 Miguel Angel Nieto organized a band of 300 Yaqui Indians led by Chico Garcia onto Fernando De la Vega land southeast of present day Yorba Linda becoming known as the “Manchurian commandos” after their experiences fighting against Anglo forces during the Mexican Revolution . This event helped start what would become known as Hispanic culture within Yorba Linda . By 1880 over 90% of residents were Spanish speaking making it one of only two cities in Orange County without any English speaking majority . This situation changed after World War I when many Mexicans came ashore seeking work opportunities outside America while also trying to escape renewed persecution within their own country following President Porfirio Diaz's "Pacto MX" campaign promise Of social equality for all nationals regardless race or ethnicity With America however many Mexicans chose instead To reside within legal boundaries instead Of risking deportation either through Ellis Island boat arrivals or more hazardous crossing into Southern California waters through Mono Lake
