Yorba Linda is a city in San Mateo County, California, United States. The population was 56,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Francisco Bay Area and is the most populous city within that region. Yorba Linda's downtown area has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The first Europeans to visit what is now Yorba Linda were Portuguese fishermen who anchored off the coast on December 6, 1775, when Lieutenant Pedro Alvares de Mena reported seeing "a great many small boats filled with people coming from inland" and thought they may be "the Guanahani." On January 21st 1821 Captain James Cook sailed by and named it Point Conception after General John Cranch's headquarters on shore at Monterey. After Captains Bligh and Watson explored Juan Fernández Island in 1827 both men stayed for two weeks before returning home to report their findings back to George Vancouver on July 16th. In 1836 Mission Santa Clara was founded by Father José Altamira with land grant from King Ferdinand VII of Spain; it was soon followed by Mission San José de las missiones (later renamed as Mission Santa Cruz) which also received land grant from Mexico in 1840. Commodore Perry attacked Mexican ships off Point Conception during his visit to Monterey Peninsula early in 1846 seeking supplies for American forces fighting against Mexico—the USS Constitution (1790), under Commodore James K Moore fought various skirmishes near Yorba Linda during this time including one February 14th – 15th event where four Mexican sailors were killed by Moore while he was ashore taking possession of two local vessels not long after Perry's attack; these events are commemorated each year with a public holiday known as Commodore Perry Day locally. In 1870 an act was passed creating San Mateo County; Yorba Linda became its town center following incorporation on November 3rd that year. The original townsite included all or parts of: Orinda, Dunster, Millbrae, North Beach/Davis Point/Petaluma, Cypress Heights/Woodlands Park areas north of Interstate 80 east of Highway 280 and west of Interstate 680 between El Sobrante Boulevard and MacArthur Boulevard; today only Orinda remains contiguous within its original boundaries while Millbrae has been split into three portions: Millbrae proper (northwest corner along MacArthur Boulevard between El Sobrante Boulevard and MacArthur Boulevard), Woodlands Park (southwest corner along El Sobrante Boulevard between MacArthur Boulevard and Irwin Avenue), and Dunster ( southeast corner along Irwin Avenue). Yorba Linda, California is located in the San Francisco Bay Area of California. The city was founded on December 12, 1867 by John Sutter and his family. It grew rapidly during the Gold Rush and soon became a major railroad terminus. In 1920, Yorba Linda joined the City of San Francisco as part of the Municipal Amendment No. 8 which granted cityhood to San Francisco. The City of Yorba Linda continued to exist until it merged with the City of San Rafael in 1996 to form the current city government. The first European settlers in what is now Yorba Linda were Anglo-Saxon Protestants who arrived on horseback from Chico in 1849. From 1850 through 1860, they operated a Mission school at present day Woodlawn Avenue and First Street (now Yorba Linda Boulevard). This mission was destroyed by fire on January 9, 1860 but settlement continued for another year or so before being discontinued because of lack of available land. In 1865, Alexander Graham Bellows built a home on section 3A (now Seventeenth Street) around what is now his garage and laboratory complex; this house remains standing today as one ofbellows' few remaining residences from that time period. On December 12, 1867 John Sutter purchased 640 acres east side of Telegraph Road from George Hart for $4,000 cash only - this would be the first purchase made by Sutter in what would become Yorba Linda Township (later known as East Palo Alto). On February 14th 1870 James Waddell bestowed upon Sutter and his family 800 acres northwest corner Of Main Street & Railroad Ave., also within Yorba Linda Township boundaries - this would be their new Sawtooth Rancho property. On March 4th 1870 David Teague donated an additional 400 acres lying south between Second Street & Third Avenue within present day Santa Clara County - this donation makes up the easternmost piece of Teague's Rancho Act grant given to Sir William Burnett which still forms much part of northern Santa Clara County today! By November 1870 there were over 20 families living in Yorba Linda Township including nine families from Sawtooth Rancho property alone! In early 1871 Judge Royce Condon granted homestead allotments to five male citizens who had traveled westward for business purposes: Augustus De Forest Hensley (of Sacramento), Edwin Leland Stanford Jr., Willis Colefax(of Oakland), Michael Malone(of Redwood City), & Levi Strauss heir apparent Jacob Strauss Sr.. These men bought 160 acres at milepost 362 nearpresent-day Menlo Park from George Atherton for $1 per acre – thus marking not only Ventura County’s earliest agricultural settlement but also its first commercial establishment outside Northern California’s Central Valley…. By early 1872 there were already over 100 residents operating outposts throughout Yorba Linda township….. Beginning on October 15th1872 three Edison brothers – Samuel Folsom (brother-in-law to Benjamin Franklin Carter), Edward Whitehead( age 22 years old), & Ebenezer Brockman (age 21) set up shopDIRECTV COFFEE COAST LINE TELEGRAPH COMPANY west End abdominally across First street northwest corner Telegraph road opposite Post Office
The first Europeans to arrive in Yorba Linda were the French in 1769 and they built a mission there. The Spanish arrived later and they set up a Mission San Francisco de Asís. In 1821, the Mexican government took over the mission and it was abandoned. In 1828, an Englishman named James Cook discovered California and he set up a trading post at Point Conception on the north coast of Yorba Linda. He named the place Arcadia after his home country. In 1849, Captain John Cranch established a military base on Yorba Linda Peninsula called Fort Carrillo. The town of Arcadia grew up around this base and it became known as part of Rancho Santa Clara Alta (Rancho Santa Clara Lower).In 1857, José Joaquín Seguin founded a settlement on what is now Coast Highway 98 near present-day Pacific Beach. This settlement was called Yerba Buena because it had water access from the ocean and it was also near seaports so that goods could be shipped into California. By 1870, there were over 100 people living in Yerba Buena.In 1907,the county seat of Orange County moved from Newport Beach to Laguna Beach because of population growth in southeastern Orange County. At this time, most of Yorba Linda Peninsula was annexed by Laguna Beach while parts of eastern Irvine County remained part of Anaheim Hills
