Yorba Linda is a small city located in San Mateo County, California, United States. The population was 30,827 at the 2010 census. It is the second-largest city in San Mateo County and seventh-largest city on the Peninsula. The first Europeans to visit Yorba Linda were Captain Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo and his crew of 16 Spanish sailors who anchored off the coast of Yorba Linda on October 24, 1542. They named the cape El Dorado after an Indian chief they had met in Peru who told them that there was an island with great riches resideant on or near this cape. In 1868 oil rigs began drilling for oil off Yorba Linda beach and by 1907 production had reached 1 million barrels per day (mbd). In 1938, a paper mill was built on what is now First Street and became one of America's most important paper mills producing over 120 million pieces of paper a day until it closed in 1978. A major fire destroyed much of downtown Yorba Linda during the night of December 3–4, 1964; however, no loss resulted from the fire because all buildings within easy reach were evacuation shelters open to anyone who needed them. The following year saw some significant growth when UPI Publishing moved its operations from Oakland to nearby Menlo Park as part of their move from New York City tochrome printing press technology which then spread throughout North America including other companies such as Dow Corning Corporation UPI's parent company Ameritech Inc., later acquired by Time Warner Companies*, left downtown Yorba Linda for Burlingame* where they established their main campus before moving back into downtown Menlo Park after Time Warner's divestiture in 1998(*approximately). A new business district has been built adjacent to Interstate 280 just east of Bushnell Way since 1984 when Chevron merged with Texaco Inc.* which also owned land adjacent to I-280 (* approximately). This Business District contains many large corporate headquarters as well as numerous small businesses including several banks, medical clinics and restaurants*.
Yorba Linda was founded in 1887 by Captain John C. Fremont and his family as a trading post on the Yorba Linda River. In 1915, it became a city, and in 1955 it became incorporated as a village. The population of Yorba Linda increased from 2,000 in 1975 to over 25,000 by 2000. The city is now an important center for research and education in the Silicon Valley region of Northern California.
