This led to an influx of miners and settlers to the area and new businesses were established such as saloons and blacksmithshops. The towns along the Salmon River had become centers for business and social life due to their close proximity to mines and other resources. As mining became more prevalent in California, so did gambling debts among miners who could not afford to pay back their loans quickly enough. This led to riots and lawlessness in many areas of California as rival gangs battled each other for control of lucrative mines and territories. In 1861, Abraham Lincoln was elected President of the United States; his cabinet included James Buchanan as Secretary of War and Andrew Johnson as Secretary of State. One reason why America was so interested in acquiring territory east of Mexico City was because San Francisco Bay lay just east of what is now downtown Los Angeles – San Francisco would be connected directly with Mexican soil by way of this bay if acquired without war or bloodshed (this idea would later be realized during World War II when Bay Bridge traffic congestion resulted from military exercises). When Buchanan learned about this opportunity he suggested that only Californians should vote on annexation because no one else wanted it – thereby excluding East Coasters! This move outraged many East Coasters who saw themselves as rightful owners of California based on historical connections (eastern descendants include current day Angelenos). However, withdrawing troops from Arizona helped give Gold Rush-era LOS ANGELES its start –Lombard Street runs between 2nd & 4th Streets near Central Park today due largely to events related to this push for annexation: Commodore Perry’s visit followed by news reports saying GOLD WAS WALLS DOWN IN CALIFORNIA LANDS 3 MILES EAST made entrepreneurs believe they could find valuable minerals there too In 1872 Congress passed legislation giving Oregon Territory its own government; it wasn't until 1912 that Californians voted on statehood despite protests from those living eastward including Mayor Richard MOBLEY OF LOS ANGELES who warned them about possible consequences if their statehood didn't receive a clear majority through popular vote like Oregon had done previously What ensued was months-long violence along I-5 between easterners supporting expansionism (read: white men) vs west coaststers opposing secessionist sentiment
The area now known as Woodland was first inhabited by the Kasaipas tribe of Native Americans. The area was part of Rancho Cucamonga, a land grant given to José Antonio Palou by Governor Manuel Nieto in 1874. The Palous bought and sold portions of the Rancho Cucamonga land until it became part of the city of Irvine in 1914. In 1876, Samuel Winchester purchased 1,500 acres from José Antonio Palou. He organized the Winchester National Forest and named it after his father-in-law, Samuel Winchester (1784-1868). In 1903, James Fenton acquired 3,000 acres of ranchos east of Woodland from Samuel Winchester. The Fentons built a reservoir on their property and named it Lake Arrowhead after themselves and their two daughters, who had helped out with farming at the rancho while they were growing up.
