The first post office opened in 1880, and the first store was built in 1881. In 1886, the name of the town was changed to Woods Landing after John WOODS, an early settler and president of LDS Church's Central Pacific Railway. In 1940, following World War II, Woodland became part of what is now East Fresno City when that city was annexed into Fresno County. In 1957 it reverted to its original name when East Fresno City became again an independent municipality separate from Fresno County

Woodland is a small town located in Kern County, California. The community was founded in 1887 by two brothers, John and George WOODLAND. The name of the community comes from the nearby American chestnut tree which was once common in the area. Woodland has a population of only about 350 people today, but it has been growing steadily for over 100 years. The first settlement in what is now Woodland was established on the corner of Old Hwy 101 and Railroad Ave., about one mile east of present day Woodland Center. This initial community consisted of about 10 families who gathered around an old blacksmith shop to trade goods and services. The first post office called "Mt Pleasant" was established at this time, serving as the eastern terminus for mail carried between Los Angeles and San Francisco. In 1892, a new townsite was platted near what is now the heart of Woodland Center – Harmonville. This new town boasted an elegant schoolhouse built by architect George Tilton, as well as a grocery store, general store and more than 20 residences. The Harmonville Post Office opened on July 1st, 1892; however, it closed within two months due to low population numbers. In 1893-1894, another small town named Redding developed adjacent to what is now downtown Woodland Center (then called Harmony). This tiny town had just 10 residents when it failed to gain state or federal recognition until 1898 when its site became available following purchase by ranchers JOE ANDERSON and JOHN HUMPHREY from Rancho Cucamonga COASTAL LAND . As early as 1899 there were plans for a larger city planned for what is now Downtown Woodland Center with employment opportunities for workers at local smelters along with housing developments for workers and their families also under consideration….. However these plans never materialized because during that time period there were no laws regulating cities or municipalities such as those existing at that time….. In fact at that time most Californians thought any type of development beyond ranching operations or farming would be Ok’d By Gov’t…. so assorted smaller villages popped up all over rural Kern County until finally we ended up with just 3 major cities: LAWRENCE(1900), Bakersfield(1901) & Riverside(1910). But back then people didn’t really think much about it because they just assumed things would eventually converge into one big place! And boy did they ever!! A few decades later we woke up to find out how true that assumption actually was!
The area now known as Woodland was first inhabited by the Kumeyaay people, who lived here for over two centuries. In 1824, a group of American soldiers led by General George Armstrong Custer discovered and explored the region, which became known as Custer's Land. The land was eventually given to the United States in 1847 by Mexico after its victory in the Mexican-American War. The area changed hands several times before it was finally acquired by California in 1859, when Governor Pio Pico recommended that Californians move into what is now Woodland because of its rich natural resources. The town of Woodland was founded on July 10, 1860, and quickly grew into a thriving community with a population of around 100 people. By 1870, Woodland had become one of the most important towns in California due to its strategic location and trade routes with other states. In 1912, Woodland also became the first town in California to be designated as an official city.
