The history of Woodland, California is long and intricate. The area was first populated by the Kumeyaay people in the late 1800s, who built their own village on an island in the riverbed. From here they traded with other tribes and developed a trade economy that included agriculture, hunting, and fishing. The first white settlers arrived in 1848, when James Waugh and his party discovered what would become known as Woodland from a map he had seen. Waugh named the area after his home country of England, but it was only until 1865 when gold was discovered nearby that development began to take off. By 1870 there were over 60 businesses in town; all dealing in goods exported to Japan or China. In 1895 developers George Hearst and Arthur O’Leary bought out Waugh’s share of the company, becoming sole proprietors. They quickly began construction on what would be called Hearst Castle – now part of downtown LA – while also developing other properties including Malibu Canyon and San Pedro Bayou. With so much property being developed, it became necessary for a large number of workers to be housed within city limits; this led to the erection of several schools and churches as well as public works projects such as bricklaying and irrigation systems. By 1902 more than 1,000 residents lived within city limits; by 1920 this figure had risen to 6500! Despite growing population pressures however, business continued to thrive until 1970 when local economic conditions collapsed following World War II spending cuts. Since then development has been sporadic at best with most areas remaining largely undeveloped except for a few scattered rural villages which have experienced some growth recently (e.g., Woodland Hills).

The history of Woodland, California goes back to the days of Spanish settlers. In 1846, a group of issue merchants from the Mexican state of Baja California traveled through the area and noted that the forests were rich in trees and potential for lumber. They decided to settle in what is now Woodland County, California. The first permanent residents of what would become Woodland County were a group of Czech immigrants who arrived in 1851. For many years, they farmed land near where they lived until they built a home on Victoria Peak in 1865. In 1872, American pioneers James Irvine and George Hearst came across the wooded hills northeast of present-day Sacramento while exploring the new territory that was given to them by Mexico after California was won at the Battle of Buena Vista. Hearing about this land purchase and its potential for agriculture, they immediately began purchasing parcels hereabouts and founded Irvine Rancho State Park as part of their holdings. The town growth that took place during these early years can be seen in places like Glen Oaks Cemetery (now an All-American cemetery), which was established in 1870; First United Methodist Church (1871); Presbyterian Church (1872); Pico House (1873), home of Governor Hiram Johnson during his time as president; and Irvine Mill (now known as Old Glendale Mall). These structures helped define Woodland’s early days as a rural outpost with homespun culture run by Scots-Irish farmers whoOPenedup shopkeepers such as Wm Snider at his store on Main Street. The town grew rapidly thanks to transportation improvements brought about by Southern Pacific Railroad founder John Dennison when he bought land east of Rubicon Dam for an agricultural district that would eventually include much today’s Silicon Valley boundary between Menlo Park and Palo Alto counties. Soon after, Dennison named his proposed community “Irvine” after himself or one of his family members – possibly father or son John Aird – just to make sure everyone got credit for what had been accomplished.
The original forest in Woodland was a stand of Douglas-fir that was first logged in 1847. The woodlands were gradually cleared for farming and housing, and the fir trees continued to be cut down until about 1940 when they were replaced by other trees, such as oak and ash. Since then, the land has been mostly cultivated with grapes, almonds, olive oil, cattle, and other crops.
