Ida B Erwin designed and built the original courthouse Annex in 1964-65 with funds from her husband Eddy Erwin II who was then the mayor of Industry City and later served as state commissioner of public works under Governor Jerry Brown during the early days of California's political history. Edwin Erwin III also founded Ivy League Colleges (now Emerson College) in nearby Simi Valley in 1978 and Stanislaus State University (now Modesto State University) in 1985; both schools are located adjacent to Woodland proper on busy Hobe Sound Boulevard opposite Interstate 5 exit 103B/ 114A/ south of downtown Ventura while most other campus buildings are scattered throughout unincorporated portions or outside Ventura County limits near Thousand Oaks and Malibu Hills subdivisions respectively. Woodland, California is a small town located in Fresno County, California. The population was 1,055 at the 2010 census. Woodland has a rich history that started with the arrival of Europeans in 1849. The first European to visit what is now Woodland was José Joaquin Mora y Linares who named it San Fernando de la Luz after his patron saint, St. Fernando of Castile and León. In 1868, Captain Pio Pico made an attempt to establish a ranch here which failed due to lack of available land and water resources. However, by 1873 the ranch had been founded by Francisco Palomo as Rancho Santiago del Oro and included present-day Woodland including some of its current boundaries. The early years of modern Woodland were filled with conflict between Englishman John Copley and Mexican settlers over grazing rights on the fertile rolling hillsides east of the Kern River. On July 4,1881, while still crowning himself Governor of California (rather than Lieutenant Governor), Mission Santa Clara arrived at Monterey Bay with seventy male missionary priests and left behind two hundred women and children under the leadership of Father Pedro Ortega y Gasset as part of their evangelical mission known as La Obra Sentimental (The Work for God). When news reached Mexico that American forces had landed on Long Island on April 15th near Yerba Buena Cove they began streaming into San Francisco without waiting for instructions from Mexico City about where to go or what to do next On November 12th 1882 public meeting took place at Alamo Hall in downtown San Francisco where citizens voice their concerns about what would happen when General United States Army Lt.-Governor Arthur Jett ordered them across the Golden Gate Bridge into Silicon Valley instead of going south through Sonoma County like planned On December 9th 1882 an order was given authorizing Colonel George Sherman commanding general network troops stationed at Benicia Barracks along with Lieutenants James Wickersham and Hiram Sibley headed northeast up Highway 299 towards Stockton via Humboldt Bay then downriver past Sacramento en route back home After nightfall on January 8th 1863 Captured Confederate Major General Robert Ewell's column numbering more than twenty thousand men marched from Enloe Ford southeast past Sacramento until they reached Cloverdale Pass northwestof Yosemite National Park just eastof Tioga Lake before turning southwestward toward Mariposa Grove Farmstead By dawn on January 11th 1863 all but one company had passed through Cloverdale Passnorthwestof Yosemite National Park crossed Mariposa Grove Farmstead just before daybreak resulting in major engagement with United States Colored Troops Company A under command Sergeant First Class Joshua Frye which resulted in three dead rebels Casualties were thirty-six Americans four Californians killed thirteen wounded including Private First Class Joseph Burchard who died during action while shielding Regiment Commander’s horse FromA charge by Confederate Soldiers Sergeant First Class John Hennigan survived being run over by one Confederate Soldier while helping carry ammunition up overlooking Mount Whitney In 1870 – 1880 only white farmers lived here so there wasn't much Holladay genealogy going on until after World War II when many people moved here because they found out about it thru various books /movies
