Woodland, California was founded by the Masons in 1849. The town was named for a grove of trees located on the banks of the Sacramento River. In 1868, Woodland became part of Los Angeles County and remains one of its most populous cities. The city is home to many important museums, including the California Palace of Fine Arts, as well as several universities and parks. The history of Woodland can be traced back to when Spanish settlers arrived in California in 1769. They designated a piece of land along the Sacramento River as their new capital, and soon built Fort Tejon to protect their colony from attacks by Native Americans. A year later, they erected a larger fort at what is now known as Mission San Gabriel Arcangelus. In 1776, Mexican soldiers led by Antonio López de Santa Anna destroyed this fort and burned down the missions within sight of Woodland. For several years after this event, no Spaniards ventured into or around present-day Woodland because it was considered too dangerous for them alone to venture out onto these treacherous acres without help from Indians. In 1847, Englishman John Cranch discovered gold near present-day Fresno while exploring for settlements in what is now central California. After prospecting for some time himself, Cranch organized a party of forty men with instructions to explore all possible routes leading northward toward rich deposits that lay beneath the earth’s surface. One group bypassed established goldfields in order to reach what is now Central Valley where they found rich veinsof gold but also experienced numerous danger encounters with hostile natives who threatened their lives and properties). After finding little gold but making an impressive discovery worth millions sterling (and setting off an international frenzy that has been described as “the greatest exploration ever undertaken by man”), Cranch abandoned his plans for wagon trains laden with treasure over sulfurous hillsides northeast of today’s Fresno when news reached him that further advances had been made at Sutter’s Mill which would likely have produced even more valuable nuggets than those he had found). This event helped spur on entrepreneur James Wolkentin (founder/director/CEO – JW Capital)to establish his enterprise which would become Brown Brothers Harriman & Co., one of America’s leading metallurgical concerns during World War I.) With Wolkentin at its helm things got really interesting; starting out small but quickly expanding into an empire that grossed over $5 billion dollars during its heyday (1918-1929). What followed were decades characterized by high economic growth rates; plummeting prices for metals relative to other commodities; massive job creation (+ 50% per annum growth rate between 1914-1945); continued investment into research and development resulting in technological milestones such as electronic mail(1965),ionic transistor(1970));and world first use(1963)of helicopter services!
