They named it La Paz after their capital in Spain and discovered an area rich in minerals including quartz,silver, gold and lead ore. However, these initial explorers didn't stay long and returned home before starting another expedition to explore this new land in 1777-78 led by Captain Manuel Nieto y Costilla with reinforcements under General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna. In that expedition they discovered oil shale deposits but never exploited them because of lack of equipment or resources. In 1836 Mexican governor Ventura granted Rancho Campesino to Californio José Maria Olivas for his father's estate near modern day Fresno City limits where he had settled since 1821 as part of Alta California grant program administered by Mexico through Governor Mirabeau Blythe during Mexican rule over northern California (1835-1846). Olivas' heirs sold the rancho back to Mexico in 1849 following a dispute over its boundaries between him and Englishman John Sutter who had bought it from Olivas' heir two years earlier for $5,000 (). It wasn't until 1861 when American Major James Wills purchased land southeast of present day Fresno from José Castro for $22 per acre ($640 peracre today) that development began on what would become Mud Lake above Highway 61 west of town on what is now known as the Old Military Road bridge just south of State Route 168 eastbound at milepost 9 due south (now U.S Route 395). At Wills' urging General Grant ordered surveyorsGeneral George Custer and Lieutenant Colonel Cyrus Nye to select a site for a new military post west of Sacramento serving as Warm Springs Army Hospital during World War I although no actual construction ever took place until 1923 when an airfield was built adjacent to current day Woodland Cemetery across US Route 395 northbound on Rucker Boulevard just east of Interstate 5 exit 11A ().
