Woodland, California is a small town in the San Joaquin Valley of California. The population was 2,798 at the 2010 census. Situated on the eastern edge of Fresno County, it is southeast of Stockton and north of Bakersfield. It takes its name from an American oak tree that stands near the town's center. The first Europeans to encounter Woodland were Spanish missionaries in 1769 who named it Villa de las Palmas after their main shipwrecking stop off the coast of Mexico City. In 1821, woodlands became part of Rancho Agua Caliente Mexican land grant given to José Antonio Burro by Governor Manuel Micheltorena for his rancho Atwater just east of today's Townsquare shopping district. In 1848, George Atherton platted what is now Woodland on Rancho Agua Caliente land grant including present-day Fresno and parts of Visalia and Madera Counties west to central Kern County. In 1850, when Gold was discovered in Northern California, Atherton sold about two-thirds (of what is now Woodland) including most of present-day Fresno County to prospectors for $1 peracre due to gold fever then raging throughout much of California during these early days before mining operations began statewide in 1855. The townsite was laid out as a village by Atherton with stores and homes built between 1851 and 1860; he also oversaw construction or donation (sometimes through joint venture) of churches, schools, hospitals and other public works not included within today’s boundaries but still visible asresidential areas around downtown Woodland until 1970 when they were annexed into nearby Fresno From 1861 until 1915 there was only one store open in town: The Kapp Brothers Store on Main Street which closed down because it could not compete against expanding real estate development around town caused by new railroad lines opening up along the Santa Cruz River corridor connecting Stockton with Sacramento and points east culminating in Roseville closing its gates for good about 1910 similar to many other small towns across America struggling during this time period as agricultural production moved inland into valleys while urban populations exploded thanks largely to immigration from Europe during this era . Mining activity increased again beginning about 1920 with local people providing hands/tools/ammunition alongside companies such as Don Benitomining company coming from Chico State University where Mining Engineering Professor Jens Christensen had been teaching classes since 1906 especially on methods used i n GOLD Rush extracting rocks outcrops near Mineral Wells creek bed southwest corner lot corner house lot number 174 building date 1912 white post office opened Aug 10 1912 annexing city hours 9am-5pm
