Woodland is a small town in Sacramento County, California, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Sacramento–Arden-Arcade–Roseville Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Woodland" comes from the location's growth as a result of lumbering and farming operations in the early 19th century. The first mention of the town was on an 1847 map of California. At that time it was known as “Pueblo de San Francisco” (St Francis Pueblo). The name change to its current form came about because of a dispute between two parties over land rights near present-day Woodlands and Arden Hills. In 1851, James Waddell surveyed and laid out what would become Woodland on land he had purchased from Manuel Ortega for $5 per acre ($ Today: $ ). The town started to grow rapidly due to its strategic location - just south of Folsom Street and east of Interstate 5 - and access to water resources such as Butte Creek and Auburn Lake. In 1907, when Robert Heston became governor of California, his Department of Water Resources proposed creating a new water district called Trinity Valley Water District based in Woodland because it offered more advantageous terms than other agencies for supplying urban areas with water supplies. On December 17, 1907, the Board OF TRINITY VALLEY WATER DISTRICT was organized with Mr. Heston as president; Drs Atherton & Howells were vice presidents; Mrs Lillian Wallace secretary; Rev JB Priestly treasurer; Geo Waddell engineer; Willis Cordeiro electrician; Harry Weisman plumber; Chas Senter carpenter; Royce Young electrician/painter; Lester Jorgensen laborer/waterproofer/contractor etc.; Willie Ewing janitorial services company which served both Arden Hills and Woodlands until 1951 when all service companies were merged into Trinity Valley Water District

In 1821, Mexican colonists founded the town of San Francisco on Mount Diablo and named it after José Joaquín de Herrera y Costilla, one of Mexico's most notable generals. The town grew quickly and by 1828, it had a population of 10,000 people. In 1847, California became a state and the town of San Francisco merged with other towns in Northern California to form what is now Sacramento. In 1865, the U.S. military built Fort Point on Monterey Bay to prevent British sailors from trading with California without permission. The fort served as an artillery battery until 1898 when it was abandoned due to lack of funds. In 1916, Woodland was incorporated as a city under the name Westwood Village. It remained an agricultural community until World War II when its residents began manufacturing products such as radios and aircraft parts for American war effort
