In 1892, the first rifle target was installed in a public shooting ground at Woodland. In 1907, the first revolver targets were placed on the property. The Rifle and Pistol Club of Woodland County became a reality in 1912. With membership growing to over 100 shooters by 1916, a hardwood floor was installed for future target use.
Woodland, California is located in the Western US and has a population of over 8,000. The area was first settled by Native Americans in the late 18th century and became part of Mexico after the Mexican-American War. In 1848, United States President James K. Polk designated this area as part of the newly formed West Coast Territory, which encompassed all of California. The first white settlers arrived in what is now Woodland in 1859 and began to clear land for a rancho. By 1870, there were about 25 people living in what is now Woodland. The town was founded on May 10, 1880 by John Cranch and his family from Illinois. The original plat included 1,600 acres (5 km²) of land east of downtown Monterey with a schoolhouse and sawmill on it. On December 17, 1886, the name was changed to Woodland after General Grant's exploratory trip through what is now California had passed through that day. At its peak during World War II (1939-1945), Woodland had a population of over 100 people; however, due to high casualty rates during that time period it declined rapidly afterwards until reaching its current size today. A number of businesses have sprung up around the town since its founding including an agricultural store/feedlot called Harold's Feedyards (now closed), Pizza Hut ($) , Java Junction ($) . There are also several golf courses nearby such as Pacific Hills Golf Course ($27 roundtrip) or Cedar Hill Country Club ($50). Most residents commute into Monterey County but there are buses available for local trips too; just look for "Monterey" written near any bus stop or stoplight!
