In 1907, Woodland hosted boththe first international speedway race and world's largest lawn bowling event called "The Great American Bowling Game". The event drew over 100,000 spectators to their streetside stands throughout Kern County. During World War II, when many people fled to evade German bombing raids or were interned without your choice due to Squalor laws in Nazi Germany, many residents joined forces with American troops stationed nearby to help fight against Axis forces during Operation Torch which led to victory for Allied forces over Nazi Germany at El Alamein.

It was founded in 1853 by John Sutter, who named it for his wooded hills that he saw from his rancho (land grant) at Butte Meadows. The name Woodland may be derived from the word "wOOD" or "hILLSIDE". The first post office in Woodland was established in 1856, and the first store opened in 1861. In 1872, an LDS church was built and services were held there until 1943. In 1865, George C. Smith discovered oil near Woodland and began drilling for oil here. The discovery led to increased production at nearby Leland Refinery and helped spur development around Woodland. In 1915, when World War I started, local farmers began growing corn for food supplies; this led to further growth of the town during World War II as businesses became involved in munitions manufacturing. After the war, new subdivisions were developed along Interstate 5 north of town while other sections of town continued to grow slowly but steadily through suburbanization and annexation by other towns over time. Today, Woodland is a small but vibrant community with a rich history that can be enjoyed today as well as tomorrow when more people come to visit its many attractions including its museum andHistoric district which are open year-round
The first Europeans to settle in the area that is now Woodland were Spanish explorers in the 15th century. The area was part of Alta California before it was given to Mexico in 1848. In 1853, the United States acquired parts of Alta California and began developing it as a land grant system. In 1864, the General Land Office issued a proclamation designating the area around present-day Woodland as the “Woodlands Grant”. The Forest Service had been established in 1906 and began managing forests in this area.
