Woodland, California is a census-designated place (CDP) in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 1,651 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fresno–Madera Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community was founded in 1879 by Captain John Sutter as the nucleus for a new town to be located on the west side of San Joaquin Valley. In 1880, many farmers who had been living in or near Bakersfield moved west to this new community and began to build homes there. In 1892, when Yosemite National Park was founded, Woodland became an official part of the park. However, because it lay outside of any ranger station or visitor center, little public attention was given to it until 1923 when then-County Supervisor Julius Eichhorn established an Office of Parks and Recreation here which began developing programs and services for the area that would include woodlands and other natural resources as well as promoting tourism in the park. In 1978, Woodland absorbed parts of Rancho Seco into its boundaries and has since grown increasingly diverse with its own commercial district (the "Woodland Marketplace") extending eastward from Interstate 5 into neighboring Tulare County; its library; fire department; schools: three elementary/middle schools (Grades K-4), one high school (11th-12th grade), two postsecondary institutions:California State University - Fullerton and Cal Poly Pomona; three private businesses: Home Depot (in 1990), Lowe's home improvement chain (); Chico's Mexican Restaurant (); also included are a number of environmental organizations including Earth First! USA., People For The Ethical Treatment Of Animals (), Save Our Streams (). According to 2000 U.S. Census figures, Woodland had a population density of ; however according to 2006 U.S. Census figures that figure has increased by over 25%. This growth has been due largely to annexation by adjacent communities such as East Tulare (), Menlo Park () and Monterey Heights (). These annexations have led to more forested land being developed within the limits of Woodland itself as opposed to just beyond them across open farmland or agricultural areas which typically support much lower densities for housing development than do these adjacent suburbs ().

When California was founded in 1846, the land that now makes up Woodland was still part of Mexico. The first European to see it was José Francisco de la Raza, who named it San Fernando (Place of the Angels). The area's natural resources were not yet developed enough to support a permanent population and so it served as a missions outpost until 1853, when Mexico ceded all of California except for some small bits to the United States. The US government made Woodland its first permanent settlements because it wanted to establish an agricultural center in what would become California. In 1864, after the Mexican-American War ended with a US victory, General Douglas MacArthur ordered American troops besieging Stockton to withdraw. This created an opening for the US military to move into California and take over much of Mexican territory. In 1865, President Andrew Johnson signed legislation creating Calaveras County and assigning Woodland as its seat. The town's growth proceeded slowly due to its location on Native American land which was difficult to development and purchase; nevertheless, by 1870 Woodland had a population of 100 people and had begun developing into an important agricultural community. The early years of Woodland's history were filled with struggles between settlers and Native Americans: there were skirmishes over land grants, water rights, timber sales and more. However, by 1900 most aspects of daily life had been established: schools opened in 1906 (one year after Woodward College), businesses began sprouting up (such as J&R Hardware) and churches began forming (such as First Methodist Church). As time passed though various challenges faced by local residents emerged such as dwindling farmland availability due to changes in farming techniques or environmental concerns; however these moments always managed to remind locals that they were part of something larger - this is especially true during times like the 2008 financial crisis when many people lost their jobs but did not forget how they felt about their city or county back home
The Woodland area of California was first settled by the Ohlone people in the late 18th century. The area eventually became a part of Spanish California, and as such, its history is intertwined with that of Mexico and Spain. In 1821, Californios formally adopted their Declaration of Independence from Spain, and in 1848, they won statehood as a United States territory. The region soon became known for its fertile land and natural resources, which led to significant growth in the area during the early years of the 20th century. During this time, development occurred along several major corridors including Interstate 5 and State Route 116.
