The area now known as Woodland was first populated by the Chumash people. The first Europeans to explore and map the area were Spanish explorers, who visited the region in 1769. In 1821, California became part of Mexico after a Mexican-American War. Facing reduced resources and growing population, the California Gold Rush began in 1848 and ended two years later with a return of gold to Mexico. For several decades following the Gold Rush, Woodland was primarily agricultural until railways arrived in the 1860s and 1870s, making it easier for farmers to market their goods. In 1881, Congress authorized creation of Yosemite National Park through Act 4 of 1881. As part of Yosemite, Woodland received its own town hall and school district. By 1903, lumber had become an important local industry in Woodland; however, during World War I (1914-18), lumber production ceased due to shortages of materials in America due to war efforts abroad. However, post-war growth resumed with the introduction of new technologies such as plastics and fiberglass which led to increased production throughout most North American industries beginning in the early 21st century
